A wave of reactions has trailed allegations that Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, made remarks suggesting he could not guarantee the safety of former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, during a potential visit to the state.
The controversy erupted after a video clip and statements circulating online were interpreted by some Nigerians as a threat directed at Obi. Critics claim the governor’s remarks created an atmosphere of tension and could endanger the former Anambra State governor.
Following the development, several social media users accused Okpebholo of making what they described as an “irresponsible” statement, with some going as far as alleging that he should be held accountable for any harm that may befall Obi.
“Okpebholo MUST be held accountable for this assassination attempt on Peter Obi,” one user wrote, reflecting the sentiments of many aggrieved commentators online.
Supporters of Obi argued that political leaders have a constitutional responsibility to ensure the safety of all Nigerians, regardless of party affiliation, and warned against inflammatory rhetoric in an already heated political climate.
However, allies of Governor Okpebholo have dismissed the accusations, insisting that his comments were taken out of context and did not amount to a threat. They maintain that the governor merely spoke about security protocols and the need for proper coordination before high-profile visits.
As of press time, there has been no official report of any attack on Peter Obi, and security agencies have not issued statements linking the governor to any security breach.
Political observers say the development underscores rising political tensions ahead of future elections and have called for calm, urging leaders across party lines to promote peaceful engagement and responsible communication.
The situation continues to generate debate nationwide, with civil society groups stressing the importance of safeguarding democratic values and ensuring that political discourse does not escalate into violence.
