A video circulating online has sparked public outrage after showing a Nigerian police officer allegedly harassing and threatening to arrest a group of tourists for driving a right-hand drive vehicle, despite claims that the car had been approved by relevant authorities.
In the viral clip, the officer was seen confronting the tourists and questioning the legality of their vehicle, insisting that driving a right-hand steering car on Nigerian roads was an offence. The tourists, however, reportedly explained that they had obtained prior clearance and documentation permitting the vehicle’s use within the country.
Eyewitnesses and social media users condemned the officer’s actions, describing the incident as embarrassing and harmful to Nigeria’s image, especially as it involved foreign visitors. Many Nigerians argued that such encounters could discourage tourism and damage international perception of law enforcement professionalism.
Legal commentators noted that while Nigeria primarily operates left-hand drive vehicles, right-hand drive cars may be allowed under special approvals or temporary permits, particularly for visitors and diplomatic or special-use vehicles. They stressed that enforcement officers are expected to verify documentation before taking enforcement actions.
The incident has reignited calls for better training, accountability, and professionalism within the Nigeria Police Force, with citizens urging authorities to investigate the matter and clarify the regulations surrounding approved foreign vehicles on Nigerian roads.
As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official statement from the Nigeria Police regarding the viral video or the conduct of the officer involved.
