Nigerian Doctor Co-Invents Solar-Powered “Hospital in a Box” to Revolutionize Rural Healthcare in Africa
Renowned Nigerian medical doctor and innovator, Dr. Seyi Oyesola, has been celebrated globally for co-inventing the solar-powered “Hospital in a Box,” also known as the CompactOR, a groundbreaking portable operating room designed to deliver quality surgical care to remote and underserved communities across Africa.
The innovation, developed in collaboration with British engineer Alexander Bushell, integrates renewable solar energy technology with advanced medical equipment, allowing full-scale surgeries to be performed in areas with little or no access to electricity or healthcare infrastructure.
The CompactOR can be transported in a small container or vehicle and set up within minutes, equipped with essentials such as oxygen concentrators, operating lights, anesthesia machines, and sterilization units — all powered by solar panels.
Dr. Oyesola, a highly respected anesthesiologist and healthcare innovator, said the idea was inspired by the urgent need to bridge the healthcare gap in rural African communities where medical emergencies often lead to preventable deaths due to poor infrastructure.
“We wanted to create something sustainable, mobile, and reliable — a solution that brings healthcare to the people rather than waiting for them to reach it,” he explained.
The “Hospital in a Box” has since been recognized as one of Africa’s most impactful healthcare innovations, earning praise from the World Health Organization (WHO) and several humanitarian agencies for its potential to transform emergency response and surgical access across developing nations.
Dr. Oyesola’s pioneering work continues to inspire a new generation of African inventors committed to using technology and innovation to solve critical challenges on the continent.
