John Obi Mikel Urges Dual-Nationality Players to Choose African Teams First

Former Super Eagles captain John Obi Mikel has spoken out on the growing trend of dual-nationality footballers delaying decisions about international allegiance, saying African countries should not be treated as a second option.

In a recent interview, the ex-midfielder said he has personally held discussions with young players of Nigerian heritage and their parents, encouraging them to commit early to representing their country of origin rather than waiting on call-ups from European national teams.

According to him, many eligible players choose to wait in hopes of being selected by England national football team, only turning to African teams later in their careers when opportunities fail to materialize.

“I’ve had meetings with these boys and their parents, and I’ve told them: you are from Nigeria  your father is Nigerian and your mother is Nigerian  why not represent your homeland?” he said. “They keep waiting, and when they reach 25 or 26 and don’t get called up, that’s when they call Nigeria or Cameroon. We become the second option.”

Mikel stressed that African national sides, including the Nigeria national football team and the Cameroon national football team, deserve commitment and pride from eligible players, not fallback consideration.

He added that players should make firm international choices based on identity and conviction, urging those who opt for European countries to stand by their decisions rather than switching only when prospects fade.

His remarks have reignited debate among fans and analysts over nationality switches, player development pathways, and how African football federations can better attract top dual-eligible talent.
