El-Rufai Raises Questions Over Alleged Chemical Importation by NSA Office, Seeks Clarification

A fresh controversy has emerged at the federal level following claims from the office of former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, alleging that the Office of the National Security Adviser imported a highly toxic chemical substance into Nigeria.

According to statements attributed to El-Rufai’s camp, the allegation centers on the reported importation of thallium sulphate from a company in Poland. The substance is widely known in scientific and regulatory literature as a dangerous toxic compound historically linked to pesticide use and poisoning cases when misused.

The claim further states that a formal letter has been sent to the Office of the National Security Adviser, headed by Nuhu Ribadu, requesting clarification on the purpose, authorization, and safety controls surrounding the alleged importation.

Security and health experts note that thallium compounds are tightly regulated in many countries due to their toxicity, and any legitimate importation would typically require strict licensing, controlled handling, and defined industrial or research use.

As of the time of reporting, there has been no official public response from the NSA’s office confirming or denying the allegation. No supporting import records or regulatory filings have yet been released publicly to verify the claim.

Analysts say the situation underscores the need for transparent disclosure and regulatory oversight where hazardous materials are concerned, while cautioning that the allegations remain unproven pending official clarification.
