The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has expressed concern over inadequate funding for the agency, emphasizing the potential impact on its ability to combat financial crimes effectively.
In a statement before the Nigerian Senate, the EFCC chair urged lawmakers to provide sufficient budgetary support to ensure the commission can continue its work in investigating, prosecuting, and preventing economic and financial crimes across the country.
“The fight against corruption and financial crimes requires consistent funding and resources. Shortfalls in the budget hamper our operations and reduce our capacity to safeguard public funds,” the chairman noted.
The appeal comes amid growing public scrutiny of Nigeria’s budgetary allocations and concerns over the efficiency and independence of anti-corruption agencies. Senators are expected to review the commission’s funding request during ongoing budget deliberations.
Observers highlight that adequate financing for the EFCC is critical not only for ongoing investigations but also for maintaining public confidence in the government’s commitment to transparency and accountability.
