The Country Representative of ActionAid Nigeria Andrew Mamedu has called for greater accountability from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over alleged mishaps recorded during the last election.
Speaking on the electoral process on AriseTv during the morning discus, the ActionAid rep pointed to incidents such as ballot box snatching and vote buying, stressing that such irregularities undermine public trust in Nigeria’s democratic system. The representative argued that the electoral body must address lapses and strengthen mechanisms to prevent electoral malpractice in future polls.
Mamedu further noted that some citizens reportedly view the collection of funds from government officials during election periods as reclaiming what rightfully belongs to them, citing widespread infrastructural deficits and socio-economic challenges as factors shaping voter behaviour.
According to him, the situation reflects deeper governance concerns, as communities lacking basic infrastructure and development may become more vulnerable to inducements during elections. He emphasized that beyond electoral institutions, citizens must also begin to hold elected leaders accountable for their performance in office.
The ActionAid Country Representative also questioned the notably low voter turnout in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), describing it as a critical issue that requires urgent reflection by stakeholders, policymakers, and electoral authorities.
He urged reforms aimed at restoring public confidence in the electoral system, enhancing transparency, and ensuring that elections remain credible, free, and fair, adding that accountability from both institutions and political actors is essential for strengthening Nigeria’s democracy.
