Abia State Government to Settle Salary Arrears Owed to Former Councillors

The Abia State Government has announced plans to settle outstanding salary arrears owed to former local government councillors who served between 1999 and 2022.

Governor Alex Otti disclosed the initiative in a recent statement, emphasizing the administration’s commitment to addressing long-standing financial obligations and ensuring that past council officials receive what is due to them.

“The Abia State Government recognizes the service rendered by our former councillors and is taking steps to clear all outstanding arrears accumulated over the years,” Governor Otti said.

The settlement is expected to cover councillors across all 17 local government areas in the state, bringing relief to those who had served in various capacities over the past two decades.

Analysts note that this move could strengthen goodwill between the state government and local communities, as well as enhance public perception of fiscal responsibility and accountability by the current administration.

No specific timeline for the completion of the payments has been provided, but the government has assured that disbursements will commence as soon as necessary arrangements are finalized.
