Nigerian Army Rescues 18 Passengers, Including Two Infants, After Boat Hijacking

Troops of the Nigerian Army’s 13 Brigade have successfully rescued 18 passengers, including two infants, following a hijacking incident along the Nigeria-Cameroon waterways.

The attack occurred on January 11, 2026, when suspected sea pirates targeted a passenger boat operating near the Kombo Fishing Port within Cameroonian waters. Reports indicate that the assailants were operating two speedboats and a wooden boat, abducting passengers traveling between Cameroon and Nigeria.

In a statement released by Major Yemi Sokoya, Brigade Assistant Director of Public Relations, the Army confirmed that a distress call prompted troops deployed at Ikang to pursue the criminals. An exchange of fire ensued, causing one of the pirates’ speedboats to capsize, forcing the attackers to abandon the hostages and flee into surrounding creeks. All 18 passengers were rescued unharmed, including the two infants.

The Commander of 13 Brigade, Brigadier General P. O. Alimikhena, commended the troops for their prompt, professional, and courageous response, highlighting the operation as a demonstration of the Army’s commitment to safeguarding lives.

Brigadier General Alimikhena also urged the public to provide credible information to security agencies, emphasizing that community cooperation is crucial to tackling criminal activities and maintaining security along the waterways.

The successful rescue underscores the Nigerian Army’s readiness and vigilance in responding to maritime security threats in the region.
