FG, ASUU Sign Agreement on 40% Salary Increase

The Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have reached a major breakthrough after signing an agreement that approves a 40 per cent salary increase for university lecturers.

Sources familiar with the development confirmed that the agreement was concluded after a series of negotiations aimed at addressing longstanding welfare concerns of academic staff in public universities. The deal is expected to significantly improve lecturers’ earnings and ease tensions that have often led to industrial actions in the university system.

The agreement reportedly covers adjustments across academic ranks and is part of broader efforts by the Federal Government to stabilise the education sector and prevent disruptions to the academic calendar. Implementation details, including timelines and payment structures, are expected to be communicated in the coming days.

Reacting to the development, stakeholders in the education sector have welcomed the agreement, describing it as a positive step toward restoring confidence and improving the quality of tertiary education in Nigeria. Students and parents have also expressed hope that the deal will usher in a period of industrial peace in Nigerian universities.

Both parties are expected to issue official statements to provide further clarification on the agreement and its full implications.
