Long before Burna Boy, Wizkid, and other Afrobeats stars graced the Coachella stage, it was Afrobeat torchbearer Seun Kuti and his legendary Egypt 80 Band who made history as the first Nigerian act to perform at the world-renowned festival in 2012.
Carrying forward the legacy of his father, the late Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, Seun delivered a powerful performance that introduced thousands of festivalgoers to the raw energy of Afrobeat music. Backed by Egypt 80’s pulsating horns and rhythms, the set was described as a “fiery cultural showcase” that left an unforgettable mark on Coachella’s global audience.
At the time, their inclusion in the lineup was celebrated as a breakthrough moment for Nigerian music, placing Afrobeat on one of the biggest stages in the world.
Music historians often credit that 2012 performance as part of the wave that opened the door for the Afrobeats explosion at international festivals nearly a decade later.
Today, as Nigerian artistes dominate global charts and festivals, the pioneering role of Seun Kuti and Egypt 80 at Coachella remains a historic milestone in the country’s cultural export.
