The Youth Farmers Network (YOFiN) Enugu has participated in a major agroecology engagement aimed at strengthening environmentally friendly and community-driven agricultural practices across Enugu State.
The event, hosted by the Sustainable Social Development Organisation (SSDO) in collaboration with ActionAid Nigeria, brought together farmers, youth groups, civil society organisations, and development partners to promote sustainable farming systems that work in harmony with nature.
Speaking at the gathering, participants emphasized that agroecology goes beyond conventional farming, describing it as a science, a practical approach, and a people-powered movement focused on restoring soil health, enhancing biodiversity, reducing reliance on harmful chemicals, and improving livelihoods especially for young farmers.
During the engagement, YOFiN Enugu highlighted its ongoing initiatives, which include capacity-building and mentorship for young farmers, promotion of organic manure and diversified cropping systems, mobilization of youths for community-led agricultural projects, and advocacy for climate-resilient and eco-conscious farming methods.
Discussions at the event also examined the critical support systems young farmers need to thrive, such as access to funding, demonstration plots, organic farming inputs, arable land, reliable markets, and enabling government policies.
YOFiN Enugu reaffirmed its commitment to empowering young people, strengthening partnerships, and championing sustainable agriculture in the state. According to the group, advancing agroecology is key to building a farming system that protects the environment, supports livelihoods, and secures a resilient future for the next generation in Enugu State.
