Senate Confirms Former Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, as Nigeria’s New Minister of Defence
The Nigerian Senate has officially confirmed General Christopher Musa (rtd.) as the new Minister of Defence, following a rigorous three-hour screening session held on Wednesday.
Musa, who previously served as Chief of Defence Staff, faced extensive questioning from lawmakers on national security, defence policy, military reform, and the fight against terrorism. Senators described the interactive session as “thorough and necessary,” given the weight of the office he is set to occupy.
During the screening, Musa outlined his vision for strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture, promising improved synergy among the armed forces, enhanced intelligence gathering, and a renewed focus on the welfare of military personnel. He emphasized the need for modern equipment, accountability in defence spending, and community-driven security partnerships.
His confirmation comes shortly after the resignation of former Defence Minister Mohammed Badaru, a move that created the vacancy now filled by Musa. With his appointment, Musa will now oversee the country’s defence strategy at the highest policymaking level, working alongside Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle.
Public reaction to the Senate’s decision has been swift, with many applauding the choice, citing Musa’s frontline experience and deep understanding of Nigeria’s security challenges.
General Musa is expected to assume office immediately as Nigeria continues to confront complex threats ranging from banditry and insurgency to emerging security risks across various regions.
