Rivers Assembly Passes Vote of Confidence, Urges President Tinubu to Seek Second Term

The political direction of Rivers State took a notable turn on Wednesday as the Rivers State House of Assembly passed a vote of confidence on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and officially called on him to run for a second term in office.

The decision was reached during the Assembly’s 37th Legislative Sitting, following a motion jointly endorsed by 26 lawmakers loyal to the House leadership.

Moving the motion, House Leader Hon. Major Jack praised President Tinubu for what he described as a “fatherly role” toward all Nigerians, and particularly the people of Rivers State. He commended the President for key federal appointments given to Rivers indigenes and highlighted several ongoing federal projects in the state.

Lawmakers who contributed to the debate echoed similar sentiments, applauding Tinubu’s economic reforms, which they said have increased revenue flows to both state and local governments.

Speaker Rt. Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule declared President Tinubu a “compassionate father of the nation” whose policies are “turning around the fortunes” of Nigeria. He cited the President’s fulfilment of promises made to Rivers leaders during their visits to the Villa, including the appointment of 39 sons and daughters of the state into key federal positions.

After a unanimous vote in support of the motion, the Assembly resolved to:

  • Pass a vote of confidence on President Tinubu for his leadership

  • Commend him for his numerous appointments and projects in Rivers State

  • Reaffirm their loyalty to the President through the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike

  • Call on him to contest for a second term in office

  • Direct members to begin sensitizing constituents in support of the Renewed Hope Agenda

The motion was communicated in a statement signed by Martins Wachukwu, Special Assistant on Media to the Speaker.

The development positions Rivers State as one of the first in the country to formally campaign for President Tinubu’s re-election bid, more than two years before the 2027 general elections.
