Reps Minority Caucus Demands Immediate Suspension of New Tax Laws

The House of Representatives Minority Caucus has called on the Federal Government to immediately suspend the implementation of Nigeria’s newly enacted tax laws, citing alleged post-passage alterations that deviate from what lawmakers originally approved.

Led by Minority Leader Rep. O.K. Chinda, the caucus raised concerns that the gazetted versions of the laws differ significantly from the texts debated and passed in the National Assembly. The laws in question include the Nigeria Tax Act 2025, Nigeria Tax Administration Act 2025, Nigeria Revenue Service Act 2025, and the Joint Revenue Board Act 2025, all signed into law in June and scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2026.

The alarm was first sounded by Rep. Abdussamad Dasuki, prompting the House to establish an investigative committee to examine the discrepancies. The Minority Caucus described the situation as a direct attack on legislative independence and urged Nigerians to disregard any versions not officially signed by the Clerk to the National Assembly and the President.

The controversy has attracted widespread attention, with the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), and prominent political figures such as Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi calling for the suspension of the laws.

Meanwhile, the Federal Government maintains that the laws will proceed as scheduled, while the House reviews the situation and considers possible re-gazetting to resolve the dispute.
