Public Outcry Grows as Nigerians Question Government’s Handling of Security Matters

Fresh concerns have emerged on social media as Nigerians openly questioned the Federal Government over its approach to national security, particularly regarding the continued influence of controversial figures within government circles.

In a strongly worded message addressed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (@officialABAT), critics asked, “Who is Gumi?”—a reference to Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, whose past comments and engagements on security-related issues have repeatedly stirred public debate.

The questions also extended to the role of Bello Matawalle, former Zamfara State governor and current Minister of Defence, with citizens asking why he remains in the position amid persistent insecurity challenges across the country. Many argued that the worsening security situation demands accountability and a thorough review of leadership within the defence sector.

At the heart of the criticism is a growing perception that the government appears more responsive to individuals accused of sympathising with armed groups than to victims of terrorism. Commentators expressed frustration that communities affected by banditry and insurgency continue to suffer losses while policy responses seem slow or ineffective.

The renewed outcry reflects broader public anxiety over Nigeria’s security strategy and calls for transparency, decisive action, and a clear commitment to prioritising the safety and welfare of citizens above all else.
