A wave of public commentary has resurfaced online as Nigerians revisit one of the most controversial projects of the Buhari administration the failed launch of Nigerian Air amid renewed criticism of former government officials.
Social media users drawing comparisons to the tenure of former Attorney-General Abubakar Malami have argued that, regardless of perceived shortcomings, the Nigerian Air episode stands out as one of the boldest and most questionable stunts in recent governance history.
Critics recalled how billions of dollars were reportedly committed to the national carrier project, only for the government to unveil what was later revealed to be a repainted Ethiopian Airlines aircraft. The aircraft was displayed just days before the end of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, sparking nationwide outrage and accusations of deception.
The project, initially sold as a revival of Nigeria’s aviation pride, quickly unraveled after investigations showed that the aircraft was neither owned nor operated by Nigeria. Aviation experts and civil society groups described the move as a symbolic launch with no operational substance.
Reacting to the episode, Nigerians on X and other platforms described the incident as something “even fictional criminal gangs would hesitate to attempt,” using satire to underscore their frustration with perceived impunity and lack of accountability in high-level governance.
The Nigerian Air controversy has since become a reference point in debates about transparency, public finance management, and political showmanship. Many citizens are now calling for renewed investigations and accountability, insisting that lessons must be learned to prevent similar episodes in the future.
As discussions around governance reform and anti-corruption intensify, the Nigerian Air saga remains a powerful reminder of public trust broken — and the growing demand by Nigerians for leaders to match ambition with honesty and accountability.
