A Nigerian lawyer has stirred fresh debate after alleging that the actions of Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi mirror those of his late father, Sheikh Abubakar Mahmoud Gumi, warning that the family’s influence within sensitive national spaces deserves closer scrutiny.
In a statement circulating online, the lawyer claimed that Sheikh Abubakar Gumi enjoyed what he described as an “easy run” in the period following the Nigerian Civil War, suggesting that his position and influence at the time shielded him from serious accountability. He argued that similar patterns are now being observed in the activities and public interventions of Sheikh Ahmad Gumi.
The lawyer further raised concerns over the fact that Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has a son serving in the Nigerian Army, stating that while this is not in itself a crime, it calls for heightened vigilance given the elder Gumi’s controversial engagements and statements over the years.
“These people need to be watched closely,” the lawyer said, stressing that national security institutions must remain alert to any potential conflicts of interest or undue influence, especially at a time when Nigeria is grappling with terrorism and widespread insecurity.
The comments have triggered mixed reactions online, with some Nigerians agreeing that public figures involved in sensitive security discourse should be carefully monitored, while others have described the claims as speculative and potentially unfair.
As of the time of filing this report, neither Sheikh Ahmad Gumi nor the Nigerian Army has responded to the claims.
