Kidnapping Now Classified as Terrorism, Punishable by Death — Senate President Akpabio

The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, on Wednesday announced that the Senate has officially classified kidnapping as a terrorist offence, making it punishable by death with no option of a fine.

Akpabio stated that the decision underscores the National Assembly’s determination to confront the growing threat of kidnapping and violent crimes across the country. According to him, the new stance is intended to act as a strong deterrent to criminal elements who have continued to endanger lives and destabilize communities.

The Senate President also reaffirmed the chamber’s unwavering support for the newly confirmed Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (rtd.), expressing confidence in his ability to contribute significantly to the fight against insecurity.

Akpabio noted that General Musa brings extensive military expertise to the office and said the Senate expects tangible progress in the ongoing battle against terrorism, banditry, and insurgency.

The Senate’s resolution has sparked conversations nationwide, with many Nigerians welcoming the death penalty classification as a necessary measure in a country where kidnapping has become a widespread menace. Others argue that strong legal penalties must also be matched with improved policing, better intelligence gathering, and justice system reforms to ensure meaningful impact.
