The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) has proposed the creation of a Cassava Chamber of Commerce in Oyo State, aiming to boost the cassava value chain and promote economic growth in the region.
Speaking during a recent agricultural stakeholders’ forum, IITA officials highlighted the importance of cassava as a strategic crop for food security, industrial use, and wealth creation. They noted that establishing a chamber would unify farmers, processors, and investors, improve market access, and attract both local and international investment.
“A Cassava Chamber of Commerce will serve as a platform to organize stakeholders, strengthen supply chains, and create opportunities for youth and women in agribusiness,” the institute stated.
The initiative is expected to facilitate capacity building, technology adoption, and value addition across the cassava sector, potentially transforming Oyo State into a hub for cassava-based industries.
State agricultural authorities have welcomed the proposal, promising to collaborate with IITA and other stakeholders to ensure the successful establishment of the chamber.
Experts say that such a move could significantly enhance economic diversification, generate employment, and improve the livelihoods of thousands of farmers in Oyo State.
