Speaking during a Senate session, Oshiomhole lamented the persistent diversion of social intervention funds, telling Senate President Godswill Akpabio that corruption within government institutions continues to deny the poor the support they desperately need.
“Government thieves are embezzling money of poor people in Nigeria,” he declared, emphasizing that funds allocated for poverty alleviation rarely reach those they are intended for.
The former Edo State governor urged the leadership of the Senate to ensure stronger oversight on ministries and agencies managing social welfare programs, insisting that lawmakers have a moral duty to protect citizens.
His statement sparked murmurs across the chamber, reflecting growing frustration among Nigerians over rising hardship, inflation, and the perceived failure of palliative programs.
Oshiomhole further warned that unless corruption is thoroughly addressed, no policy designed to ease the economic burden on citizens will succeed.
The Senate President, in response, acknowledged the concerns raised and reaffirmed the legislature’s commitment to accountability and transparency in the disbursement of public funds.
