Fire Guts Jabi Timber Shade Market, Traders Count Heavy Losses

A devastating fire swept through the Jabi Timber Shade Market in Abuja today, destroying several shops and leaving traders in shock as they struggled to salvage what remained of their goods.

According to eyewitnesses, the fire started in the early hours of the morning and spread rapidly due to the highly flammable materials stored within the market, including wood, furniture, and carpentry equipment. Thick smoke covered the area as firefighters battled to bring the blaze under control.

Many traders lamented the loss of goods worth millions of naira, noting that the incident has crippled their livelihood. Some described the fire as “the worst the market has seen in years.”

Emergency responders, including the Federal Fire Service and the FCT Fire Service, were on ground to contain the inferno and prevent it from spreading to nearby structures. While no casualties have been reported so far, several shops were completely razed.

Authorities have yet to determine the cause of the fire, but an investigation is currently underway.

The incident adds to the rising pattern of market fires recorded across the country, raising fresh concerns over safety measures, emergency preparedness, and the protection of traders’ assets.

More updates are expected as officials continue their assessment of the damage.
