A social commentator known as Egbon Adugbo has publicly called out Afrobeats superstar Wizkid, accusing the singer of neglecting Surulere, the Lagos neighbourhood often referenced in his music and personal story.
In a statement circulating on social media, Egbon Adugbo said, “Wizkid, you didn’t come to Surulere to perform, yet you’ve been using Surulere to make money through your music.” The remark suggests frustration over what he described as the singer’s failure to give back to the community that helped shape his identity and brand.
Surulere holds symbolic significance in Wizkid’s rise, frequently mentioned by fans as part of his background and early hustle. Egbon Adugbo’s comments have therefore sparked conversations online about artists’ responsibilities to their roots and whether global success should translate into visible community engagement.
Reactions have been mixed. Some social media users agreed with the criticism, arguing that major artistes should regularly return to their communities with performances, projects, or empowerment initiatives. Others defended Wizkid, noting that giving back does not always have to be public or performance-based, and that artistes are not obligated to stage concerts in their former neighbourhoods.
As of the time of this report, Wizkid has not responded to the call-out. The debate, however, continues to fuel broader discussions around fame, loyalty to one’s roots, and expectations placed on successful Nigerian entertainers.
