Debate Grows Over Cause of Accident Involving Anthony Joshua as Claims Against FRSC Emerge

Public debate has continued to trail the recent accident reportedly involving boxing superstar Anthony Joshua, with critics faulting the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) over its alleged attribution of the incident to excessive speed.

Some road safety advocates and concerned Nigerians have argued that blaming the accident solely on speeding is premature and misleading. They insist that, just as excessive speed cannot be conclusively established as the cause, it is also difficult to immediately rule out the condition of the road.

According to the critics, bad roads remain a major contributor to road accidents across Nigeria. They contend that if a nationwide census were conducted on the causes of road crashes, findings would reveal that poor road infrastructure accounts for as much as 80 percent of accidents on Nigerian highways.

They further argue that while driver error, including speeding, does play a role in some crashes, the deteriorating state of many roads—marked by potholes, poor drainage, lack of signage, and failed sections—poses a far greater and more consistent danger to motorists.

The incident involving Anthony Joshua has once again reignited calls for a more balanced and evidence-based approach to accident investigations, as well as renewed pressure on authorities to prioritize road rehabilitation as a key strategy for reducing traffic fatalities.

As of press time, there has been no detailed official report outlining the full circumstances surrounding the accident, leaving room for speculation and public concern.
