“Attack on Any Protester Is an Act of Terrorism” — NLC Declares as Nationwide Protest Begins

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has warned that any attack on protesters during its ongoing nationwide demonstration will be regarded as an act of terrorism.

The warning comes as the labour union commenced a nationwide protest against worsening insecurity and deepening economic hardship across the country. The NLC said the demonstration is aimed at drawing attention to the growing cost of living, rising unemployment, fuel price hikes, and the deteriorating security situation affecting millions of Nigerians.

In a statement released on Monday, the NLC stressed that the protest is peaceful and constitutional, urging security agencies to protect protesters rather than intimidate or harm them. The union noted that Nigerians have the right to express grievances through peaceful assembly, as guaranteed by the Constitution.

“Any attack on any protester, anywhere in Nigeria, should be treated as an act of terrorism,” the NLC said, adding that violence against peaceful citizens amounts to an attack on democracy itself.

Labour leaders also called on the federal government to urgently address the economic realities facing workers and ordinary citizens, warning that continued inaction could further heighten public anger and unrest.

The nationwide protest has seen workers and civil society groups gather in major cities and state capitals, carrying placards and chanting slogans demanding improved security, fair wages, and policies that ease economic hardship.

As of the time of this report, protests remain ongoing across several states, with the NLC reiterating its call for calm, non-violence, and respect for the rule of law.
