Students from St. John Vianney Science College, Ukwulu, Anambra State, have emerged victorious in the first-ever UK-Nigeria Debate Competition, defeating top schools from both Nigeria and the United Kingdom.
The competition, organized jointly by Bring It On Africa and Debate Mate UK, brought together four Nigerian schools and three UK schools, including Central Foundation Girls' School, Maghull High School, and Shireland High School.
St. John Vianney’s team — consisting of Chibueze Jennifer, Obiokafor Catherine, Eneoli Benjamin, and Onwuegbusi Valentine under the mentorship of coach John Onuigbo — impressed judges with their poise, research, and persuasive arguments, ultimately securing the championship title.
The students first outperformed the UK schools to reach the final round, where they faced St. Augustine’s College, Jos, and won decisively.
Following the victory, Nonye Soludo, wife of the Anambra State governor, congratulated the students, describing the achievement as a proud moment for Anambra’s educational sector and a testament to the state’s commitment to nurturing world-class talent.
The triumph highlights the potential of Nigerian students to compete successfully on global platforms, and is seen as an inspiration for young people across the country to pursue excellence and embrace intellectual challenges.
