Alaafin of Oyo Declares Exclusive Authority to Confer Titles in Yorubaland

The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade I, has asserted that only the throne of Oyo holds the authority to confer chieftaincy titles bearing the prestigious name of “Yorubaland.”

In a statement made during a recent public engagement, the monarch emphasized the historical and cultural significance of the Oyo throne, noting that its recognition and endorsement are essential for any title to be considered legitimate within Yoruba land.

Oba Owoade I stated, “I am the only monarch with the authority to confer titles in Yorubaland. Any other attempt outside this throne is null and cannot carry the weight of tradition or legitimacy.”

The declaration has reignited conversations about the preservation of Yoruba customs, cultural heritage, and the sanctity of traditional institutions, especially in the face of growing commercialization of chieftaincy titles in Nigeria.

Traditionalists and community leaders have largely supported the Alaafin’s position, stressing the need to protect the integrity of Yoruba titles and prevent their abuse for personal or political gain.

This pronouncement reinforces the Oyo throne’s central role in Yorubaland as a custodian of culture, tradition, and the authority to legitimize positions of honor within the Yoruba kingdom.
