Akwa Ibom Resident Hails Reversal of Masquerade Restrictions, Calls Ban “Stupidity”

A resident of Akwa Ibom State has applauded recent reports allowing the movement of masquerades, criticizing earlier attempts to restrict the traditional practice as misguided and discriminatory.

Reacting to the development, he argued that freedom of religious expression must be equal for everyone, noting that Christian activities take place openly without obstruction.

“It is stupidity on the part of the government to ban masquerade movement in the state,” he said. “If we Christians can go about preaching our gospel unhindered, I see no reason why masquerades cannot do the same according to their own religion.”

The comment reflects growing public pushback against moves seen as suppressing indigenous cultural and spiritual traditions. Many citizens have called on the government to ensure that all belief systems — whether Christianity, Islam, or traditional religion — are respected under the law.

As cultural groups resume their activities, advocates say the focus should shift toward peaceful coexistence and responsible celebration, rather than outright bans.
