Wike Versus Naval Officer: A Lesson for National Reflection — Peter Obi Speaks on Institutional Disorder in Nigeria

Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has reacted to the recent confrontation between Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, and a Naval officer, describing the incident as “a reflection of growing institutional disorder” in Nigeria.

In a detailed statement titled “Wike versus Naval Officer: A Lesson for National Reflection,” Obi lamented how what should have been a routine civic encounter turned into a national embarrassment, symbolizing deeper systemic issues within the country’s governance structure.

“Beyond the personalities involved, this incident raises fundamental questions that demand honest national reflection,” Obi stated.

He questioned the use of military personnel for purely civil operations, and whether a Minister’s intervention in such a matter should take such an “indecorous” form. Obi emphasized the need for clear boundaries between administrative authority and the duties of security agencies, stressing that respect for institutions and adherence to due process must guide public conduct.

“Why are our men and women in uniform so often drawn into civilian disputes? Why has the culture of due process and civility given way to public spectacle and confrontation?” he asked.

Obi further asserted that Nigeria must learn from this episode, calling for a rebuilding of institutions that are stronger than individuals, where public office is exercised with humility and restraint, and where the dignity of uniformed officers and citizens alike is respected.

“A country that aspires to greatness must replace the culture of impunity with the discipline of law, order, and respect for due process,” Obi added.

He concluded by urging leaders to live up to the noble titles of “His Excellency” and “Honourable” through exemplary behavior, both in and out of office.

“A New Nigeria is POssible,” Obi affirmed.
