“We Have To Show Them We Won’t Take It” — Kogi Governor Ododo Sparks Outrage After Warning Citizens Against Criticising Tinubu Government
Kogi State Governor, Usman Ododo, has stirred nationwide controversy following a statement in which he reportedly threatened to clamp down on citizens who criticise President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
Speaking during a recent political gathering, Governor Ododo allegedly vowed that his government would not tolerate comments or actions he believes undermine the Federal Government, insisting that those who “misbehave” online or offline would be dealt with.
“We have to show them we won’t take it,” he reportedly said, referring to citizens he described as “habitual critics” of the Tinubu-led government.
The remark has triggered widespread backlash from civil rights groups, political observers, and Nigerians across social media, who argue that Ododo’s comment represents a direct attack on freedom of speech, which is protected under the Nigerian Constitution.
Critics say Ododo’s warning is reminiscent of authoritarian tactics often used to silence dissent, stressing that Nigerians have every right to express dissatisfaction with government performance.
Pro-democracy activists have also cautioned that attempts to intimidate citizens could further deepen tensions in a country already grappling with economic hardship, insecurity, and public frustration.
Meanwhile, human rights organisations have called on the federal government to clarify whether Ododo’s position reflects official policy or a personal stance.
As the debate intensifies, many Nigerians are asking whether intolerance for criticism is becoming a trend among political officeholders — and what this means for democratic governance in the country.
