Nigerian Man Laments as Price of Keke Napep Hits ₦5 Million

A Nigerian man has expressed shock and frustration over the skyrocketing cost of tricycles, popularly known as Keke Napep, which are now reportedly being sold for ₦5 million.

The man, who lamented the development in a viral social media video, questioned how ordinary Nigerians are expected to cope when one of the country’s most common means of commercial transport has become unaffordable for both riders and potential buyers.

Keke Napep, widely used across Nigerian cities and rural areas for short-distance transportation, was once considered a relatively affordable investment for small business owners and transport workers. Just a few years ago, the cost of a brand-new unit ranged between ₦700,000 and ₦1.2 million, depending on the brand.

Now at ₦5 million, many fear the hike will worsen the unemployment crisis, increase transport fares, and push more families deeper into hardship.

Transportation experts have linked the sharp rise to inflation, naira depreciation, and high import costs, as most tricycles are imported.

“This is no longer business as usual. If Keke is ₦5 million, how will a regular Nigerian youth survive?” the man lamented.
