The Federal Government of Nigeria has initiated formal consultations with authorities in the United Kingdom to facilitate the transfer of Senator Ike Ekweremadu back to Nigeria to complete the remainder of his prison sentence.
The update was disclosed by government insiders who confirmed that discussions are ongoing under international prisoner transfer agreements — mechanisms that allow convicted citizens to serve part of their sentence in their home country.
Ekweremadu, a former Deputy Senate President, is currently serving a jail term in the UK after being convicted in 2023 for organ trafficking offenses related to an attempted kidney transplant for his ailing daughter.
Officials say the move is based on humanitarian and diplomatic considerations, ensuring that the senator remains within a familiar legal and cultural environment, while still upholding the conditions of his sentence.
If the negotiations succeed, Ekweremadu will be transferred into the custody of Nigerian correctional authorities, where his sentence would continue according to both countries’ agreements.
Public reaction has been divided — while some view the effort as compassionate, others argue that justice must run its full course in the UK where the crime was committed.
