Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has described Nigerian internet fraudsters, popularly known as Yahoo boys, as “geniuses” who need redirection rather than outright condemnation.
Speaking during a public engagement, Obi emphasized that many young Nigerians involved in cybercrime possess exceptional intelligence and creativity that, if properly harnessed, could contribute positively to national development.
“Yahoo boys are not to be condemned,” Obi said. “They are geniuses who need redirection. Imagine if their skills in technology and coding were channelled into productive ventures like software development, cybersecurity, and digital innovation — Nigeria would be far ahead.”
He further stressed the need for government investment in digital education, entrepreneurship, and job creation, arguing that the system has failed to provide viable opportunities for millions of talented youths.
Obi’s comment has since generated widespread discussion across social media. Supporters praised him for seeing potential in Nigeria’s youth and offering a solution-oriented approach, while critics accused him of being too lenient on criminal behavior.
Nonetheless, the Labour Party flagbearer maintained that his stance was rooted in rehabilitation and national progress, noting that transforming the energy of young Nigerians into legitimate enterprises could help reduce crime and boost the economy.
His message, according to analysts, underscores the broader call for youth empowerment, digital innovation, and moral reorientation as pathways to national growth.
