Umahi Withdraws China Harbour from Abuja–Keffi Road Project, Orders Local Contractors to Take Over

The Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, has announced the withdrawal of China Harbour Engineering Company from handling the second carriageway of the Abuja–Mararaba–Keffi road project, citing non-compliance with contract design and disregard for directives from the Federal Ministry of Works.

Umahi, who made the declaration during an inspection visit to the project site on Saturday, expressed disappointment over the poor performance and deviation from approved standards by the foreign contractor.

According to the Minister, the decision became necessary to ensure quality delivery, compliance with design specifications, and timely completion of the critical infrastructure project.

“We cannot continue to tolerate non-compliance with the Ministry’s directives. Hence, the Abuja-bound carriageway handled by China Harbour is being withdrawn and will now be executed by competent local contractors,” Umahi stated.

He further directed the mobilization of local construction firms to immediately commence work on the inner and outer shoulders of the dual carriageway using rigid concrete pavement technology, which he described as more durable and cost-effective than asphalt.

Umahi emphasized that the Ministry had also issued a policy directive mandating all ongoing projects nationwide to ensure smooth traffic flow and maintain roads free from potholes or construction defects during execution.

The Abuja–Mararaba–Keffi road is one of the busiest intercity routes in Nigeria, linking the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) with Nasarawa and Plateau States, and serves as a vital corridor for trade and daily commuting.

With this latest decision, the Federal Government aims to enhance efficiency, promote local capacity, and deliver road infrastructure that meets international standards.
