Senator Ned Nwoko Calls for Nnamdi Kanu’s Release and Creation of a Sixth State for the Southeast

Senator Ned Nwoko, representing Delta North Senatorial District, has renewed his call for the release of IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, alongside a fresh appeal for the creation of a sixth state in Nigeria’s Southeast region to ensure political and structural balance.

Speaking in a recent interview, the lawmaker emphasized that the continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu has done little to address the underlying grievances in the Southeast, urging the Federal Government to embrace dialogue and reconciliation instead.

“I have consistently maintained that the Federal Government should release Nnamdi Kanu and engage him in meaningful dialogue,” Nwoko said. “Peace cannot be achieved through prolonged detention. It requires understanding, inclusion, and justice.”

Nwoko also reiterated his long-standing advocacy for the creation of Anioma State, which he believes would not only bring equity among Nigeria’s geopolitical zones but also serve as a bridge between the Igbo-speaking communities in Delta State and the Southeast.

“The Southeast remains the only zone with five states. Creating Anioma State will correct this imbalance and give our people a stronger sense of belonging in the Nigerian project,” he stated.

His remarks have sparked widespread reactions across the country, with many southeastern leaders and civil society groups commending his courage and fairness, while others called for broader constitutional reforms rather than new state creation.

As discussions continue, Senator Nwoko’s dual appeal — for justice through Kanu’s release and equity through state creation — has once again drawn national attention to the enduring issues of representation, fairness, and unity in Nigeria’s federal structure.
