A growing number of Nigerians have taken to social media to question the continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), calling for his immediate release in the interest of peace and national unity.
Using the trending hashtag #FreeNnamdiKanuNow, citizens are expressing frustration over what they describe as double standards in the Nigerian justice system, pointing to instances where convicted or repentant individuals accused of grave crimes were granted pardon or reintegrated into society.
Many referenced the rehabilitation and reintegration of former Boko Haram fighters, as well as the pardon granted to convicted individuals such as Maryam Sanda, to argue that Kanu’s prolonged detention is politically motivated and unjust.
“If Boko Haram members can be pardoned, paid, and even integrated into the Nigerian Army, and if Maryam Sanda can be pardoned after being convicted of murder, why is Nnamdi Kanu still in prison?” one user wrote. “His release will drastically reduce violence in the East.”
Supporters maintain that freeing Kanu could play a key role in de-escalating tensions and restoring calm in the South-East region, where security challenges have persisted since his arrest.
Meanwhile, rights groups and political observers continue to urge the Federal Government to explore dialogue and reconciliation, warning that prolonged detention without resolution risks deepening resentment and regional unrest.
