Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has openly criticized the Minister of Works, David Umahi, for allegedly evading questions about the actual cost of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project.
Speaking during a recent media chat, Makinde expressed frustration over the Minister’s vague responses when asked about the multi-billion-naira project, which has generated intense public scrutiny due to concerns over transparency and funding.
“How will they ask a minister how much is the coastal road, and you’re dancing around the figures?” Makinde queried. “This is taxpayers’ money. Nigerians deserve to know how much is being spent on such a massive project.”
The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway — one of the federal government’s most ambitious infrastructure projects — is expected to span over 700km, connecting several states along Nigeria’s coastline. However, the project has been met with mixed reactions over its procurement process, environmental impact, and cost transparency.
Makinde’s remarks have sparked conversations across social media, with many Nigerians commending him for speaking truth to power and demanding accountability, while others defended Umahi, insisting that detailed financial disclosures will come “at the appropriate time.”
As the debate intensifies, the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway continues to dominate headlines as one of the most controversial public projects under the Tinubu administration.
