The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced a new policy making thesis or project submission a mandatory requirement for graduates seeking mobilization into the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
Starting from October 6, 2025, all graduates will be required to upload their existing academic thesis or final-year project to the National Education Research Database (NERD) as proof of academic output before they can be cleared for NYSC.
According to government officials, the move is aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s research culture, curbing academic fraud, and ensuring that the intellectual work of students contributes to national development.
The policy has generated mixed reactions among students and graduates. While some applaud the initiative as a way to document and preserve academic contributions, others fear it could create bottlenecks for NYSC mobilization if universities and graduates are not adequately prepared.
Authorities have assured that the NERD platform will be user-friendly and that necessary support will be provided to institutions and graduates to ensure smooth compliance.
