A retired Director of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ayo Olowonihi, has expressed confidence in the newly appointed INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN), describing him as a man of integrity who will ensure that Nigerians freely elect their leaders.
Speaking in a statement on Thursday, Olowonihi said Professor Amupitan’s record as a respected law teacher and upright public servant makes him well-suited to lead Nigeria’s electoral body at a time when public trust in the commission is at a low point.
“Amupitan is the INEC Chairman that will let Nigerians elect their leaders. He will not be the kind of chairman who tells people to go to court after every election. He is a man of integrity, and character is key in this job,” Olowonihi stated.
The retired EFCC director emphasized that leadership character and moral courage are more important than political loyalty in restoring confidence in the electoral process.
Professor Amupitan, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and former Dean of Law at the University of Jos, was recently appointed as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to replace Professor Mahmood Yakubu.
His appointment has generated widespread interest, with many Nigerians expressing both optimism and caution. While some believe his academic and moral background could bring credibility to INEC, others have urged him to resist political pressure and ensure that the commission operates independently.
Olowonihi’s endorsement adds to a growing number of voices calling for a new era of transparency and fairness in Nigeria’s electoral process, with expectations that Amupitan’s leadership will mark a turning point in how elections are conducted across the country.
