Amnesty International Reports: Businessman Anochie Fidel Ezechukwu Missing Since 2022 After Alleged Abduction by Security Agents

Human rights organization Amnesty International has raised alarm over the alleged abduction and disappearance of Anochie Fidel Ezechukwu, a 52-year-old businessman from Ukpor in Nnewi South Local Government Area, Anambra State, who was reportedly taken by state security agents more than two years ago.

According to Amnesty International’s report, Ezechukwu was abducted on August 2, 2022, at about 4:30 p.m., from his business premises located at Umudaraolisa Ehim village, Umunuko Ukpor. Witnesses said he was forcefully taken away by men believed to be operatives of a state security agency who arrived in multiple vehicles, one of which bore the registration number NPF-555-NG.

Since that day, Ezechukwu has not been seen or heard from, and his whereabouts remain unknown. His family has reportedly made numerous attempts to locate him, reaching out to various security formations and authorities, but all efforts have proved futile.

Amnesty International described the case as another example of enforced disappearance, a violation of human rights that has become increasingly concerning in Nigeria.

“The abduction and continued disappearance of Anochie Fidel Ezechukwu without acknowledgment or information from the authorities constitute a grave violation of both Nigerian and international human rights law,” Amnesty International stated.

The group urged the Nigerian government to immediately investigate the case, ensure accountability, and provide justice for Ezechukwu’s family.

“Authorities must disclose his whereabouts, ensure his safe release if he is still alive, and hold those responsible to account,” the statement added.

Ezechukwu’s family, friends, and community members continue to live in anguish and uncertainty, hoping for answers and justice over two years after his disappearance.

Human rights advocates have also renewed calls for the government to end the pattern of secret detentions and extrajudicial abductions, stressing that such actions erode public trust and undermine the rule of law in the country.
