Nigeria’s media industry has been thrown into mourning following the tragic death of Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, a 29-year-old lawyer and anchor with Arise News, who was killed during a robbery attack in Abuja.
Somtochukwu, celebrated as a brilliant broadcaster with a commanding voice and sharp intellect, had quickly distinguished herself in journalism. Her promising career was cut short in the most painful of circumstances, sparking widespread grief and outrage.
Presidential candidate Peter Obi (PO) described her passing as a “huge blow to journalism and to our nation, which continues to lose its brightest to insecurity and violence.” He called for urgent action to protect Nigerians, stressing that no citizen should live or die in fear.
The news of her death has ignited a fresh wave of debate on the rising spate of insecurity in the country and the need for government to prioritize the safety of lives and property.
