President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, to immediately engage with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), the Ogoni people, and other key stakeholders in order to finalise modalities for the resumption of oil production in Ogoniland.
The directive, announced on Tuesday, underscores the Federal Government’s commitment to reviving economic activities in the oil-rich but restive region, while also addressing long-standing grievances of the Ogoni people over environmental degradation, marginalisation, and underdevelopment.
President Tinubu emphasized that the renewed effort will balance national economic interests with the protection of the environment and the welfare of host communities.
The Ogoni issue, which has spanned decades, has often been a flashpoint of agitation and conflict. The government’s latest move is seen as a significant step toward building trust and ensuring sustainable resource management in the Niger Delta.
Stakeholders are expected to commence high-level consultations in the coming weeks to agree on a framework that will pave the way for oil production to resume after years of suspension.
