Supreme Court Under Fire for Delay in PDP Governors’ Suit Against FG

Nigeria’s Supreme Court is facing heavy criticism after failing to deliver judgment in a case filed 162 days ago by eleven PDP governors against the Federal Government.

The suit, which challenged the removal of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the appointment of a sole administrator, has reportedly been left “on a dusty shelf,” raising concerns about judicial neutrality.

Critics argue that the apex court, once known for fearless rulings under the likes of Justices Kayode Eso, Chukwudifu Oputa, Mohammed Uwais, Karibi-Whyte, Anthony Aniagolu, and George Oguntade, has now descended into what they describe as “regime protection.”

Observers warn that the judiciary’s silence in politically sensitive cases undermines democracy, discourages foreign investment, and risks pushing Nigeria toward failed-state status.

“The fastest road to collapse is when citizens completely lose faith in the judiciary,” one critic remarked, noting that elections in Nigeria have become some of the world’s most expensive—only to end in the familiar refrain: “Go to court.”
