Tension flared at the Rivers State Government House on Tuesday as security personnel staged a protest over unpaid allowances.
The protesting officers, drawn from various security agencies attached to the Government House, expressed frustration over what they described as months of neglect despite their critical role in safeguarding the seat of power.
Eyewitnesses reported that the usually calm environment around the Government House witnessed unusual activity as the personnel gathered to demand immediate payment. Some carried placards, while others openly voiced their grievances against state officials responsible for their welfare.
A senior officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said:
“We have been risking our lives daily without being paid what is due to us. We can no longer keep quiet while our families suffer.”
As of press time, government officials had not issued a formal response to the protest, but sources within the Government House hinted that urgent meetings were being held to address the matter and prevent an escalation.
The incident adds to the growing list of labor-related tensions in the state, raising concerns over the impact on governance and security operations in Rivers.
