President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has honoured four late Ogoni leaders with posthumous national awards, recognizing their sacrifice and contributions to Nigeria’s democratic struggle and the fight for justice in the Niger Delta.
Those conferred with the Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) are:
-
Chief Edward Kobani
-
Chief Albert Badey
-
Chief Samuel Orage
-
Chief Theophilus Orage
The recognition, announced at the State House in Abuja, comes nearly three decades after the tragic execution of the Ogoni leaders during the military era — an incident that sparked global outrage and drew attention to the plight of the Ogoni people.
President Tinubu said the honours reflect his administration’s commitment to healing old wounds, fostering national reconciliation, and acknowledging the sacrifices of those who fought for equity, justice, and human rights.
The gesture has been widely welcomed as a symbolic step in addressing historical grievances in the Niger Delta and strengthening national unity.
