Outrage as Abike Dabiri-Erewa Faces Backlash for Allegedly Laughing at Ethnic Slur Targeting Igbos

A wave of public outrage has erupted across social media platforms after a video clip allegedly showing Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairperson of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), laughing in response to an ethnic slur targeting the Igbo community surfaced online.

In the now-viral clip, a speaker makes derogatory remarks, referring to Igbos as "gorillas and monkeys", while Dabiri-Erewa is seen reacting with what appears to be visible amusement. The footage has since sparked intense criticism, with many Nigerians calling the moment “disgraceful,” “unacceptable,” and “deeply divisive.”

Social media users, activists, and public commentators have not held back in expressing their disapproval, especially given Dabiri-Erewa’s high-profile role in representing Nigeria's image abroad.

“This is really bad. This is completely disgraceful,” one user wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
“A government official must rise above divisive bigoted madness and never participate in petty insanities.”

“Why is Aunty Abike Dabiri gleefully laughing about an entire tribe being called gorillas and monkeys?” another user asked in disbelief.

Many have condemned the moment as not just poor judgment, but a serious breach of the expectations placed on public office holders — especially one tasked with defending the rights of Nigerians globally.

As of the time of filing this report, Dabiri-Erewa has not issued a statement addressing the video or clarifying her position. Her social media pages remain active, but no post has referenced the incident, further fueling public frustration.

While this specific moment is under scrutiny, critics argue that it points to a larger problem within the Nigerian political landscape — where ethnic divisions are often tolerated or even encouraged by individuals in positions of power, rather than discouraged.

Civil society groups are now calling for:

  • A formal apology from Dabiri-Erewa.

  • A review of the incident by NIDCOM and the Presidency.

  • Stronger policies and public statements against hate speech and ethnic profiling from all federal appointees.

Nigeria’s ethnic tensions remain a fragile and sensitive issue, particularly in the wake of recent political cycles that were marred by tribal rhetoric. Observers warn that comments or reactions by top officials — even if unintended — carry significant consequences, both socially and diplomatically.

“This isn't about political correctness. It’s about leadership. What message does this send to the diaspora she represents?” asked a political analyst.

As calls for accountability grow, many await an official response from the Presidency, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, or NIDCOM, amid fears that continued silence may be interpreted as endorsement or indifference.
