“Nigeria Cannot Survive a Natural Disaster” — Citizens React After Lekki Flood

After heavy rainfall left Lekki Phase 1 submerged on Wednesday, Nigerians have taken to social media to express anger and deep concern over the country’s fragile infrastructure and lack of emergency preparedness.

A widely shared post read:

“It’s obvious that Nigeria cannot survive any type of natural disaster. You barely survive house fires & flash floods. Now imagine an earthquake, tsunami, hurricane, or forest fires? Your politicians will be the first to be airlifted. They will take off & watch UNICEF and the Red Cross do rescue missions (on CNN) from the comfort of their safe havens. People who have stolen so much & built empires overseas are afraid of death.”

The writer further lamented that while the world faces devastating earthquakes, hurricanes, and wildfires, Nigeria struggles with basic disaster response, even for routine emergencies.

“It’s a miracle that God has kept you safe from earth’s subterranean power. Your only natural disaster are your politicians. You haven’t even tackled hunger. How will you tackle a natural disaster?”

The post, which quickly went viral, accompanied footage from Lekki Phase 1, showing knee-deep water, stranded vehicles, and residents fleeing flooded apartments.

Public outrage continues to mount over the nation’s vulnerability to crises and the absence of a clear disaster management plan. Experts warn that Nigeria’s urban flooding problem could worsen with climate change if no proactive measures are taken — including proper drainage systems, emergency response capacity, and resilient infrastructure.
