Lekki, Lagos Hit Hard by Flash Flood After Heavy Rainfall

Heavy rainfall on Wednesday left parts of Lekki, Lagos State, severely flooded, disrupting movement and forcing some residents to evacuate their homes.

According to eyewitnesses, the water rose to knee level in several streets, submerging parked vehicles and flowing into ground-floor apartments. Many residents were seen wading through floodwater to secure belongings and help neighbors move to safety.

Videos circulating on social media showed cars partially underwater, while some homeowners scrambled to block entryways with sandbags and makeshift barriers.

One resident told reporters, “This flood came very fast. Within an hour of heavy rain, the streets were gone. Cars are almost submerged, and water is entering houses. Some people have left their homes to stay with friends or in hotels until it clears.”

Commuters faced gridlock as major access roads, including parts of Lekki Phase 1 and Ikate, became impassable for smaller vehicles.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has urged residents to stay indoors, avoid flooded areas, and keep emergency numbers handy. Officials say pumping operations and drainage clearance are underway to reduce water levels.

Environmental experts have again called for better drainage infrastructure and stricter building regulations in flood-prone areas to reduce the impact of seasonal rainfall.
