Italian Serie A side Atalanta have officially announced that Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman will wear the captain’s armband until the end of the season, in what the club describes as a recognition of his greatness and unique character.
In a heartfelt statement, Atalanta praised the Super Eagles star for his transformative impact on the club, acknowledging both his football brilliance and his loyalty despite past challenges.
“From now until the end of the season, he is our captain. The captain’s armband now belongs to him to signify that Atalanta also has it tattooed on its skin. We recognize greatness, and Lookman is one of the great players in the world with a unique character,” the club said.
The Bergamo-based side admitted that there were times they may have wronged him in the past but pledged to continue seeking his forgiveness while urging him to consider extending his stay with the club.
“We are already missing him even while he’s still with us. Lookman made Atalanta who we are today, and Atalanta must reciprocate. We love you, Lookman,” the statement added.
Lookman, who played a starring role in Atalanta’s Europa League triumph and Serie A resurgence, has become a fan favorite and is widely regarded as one of the club’s most important players in recent history.
The announcement has sparked an outpour of love from Atalanta fans, many of whom have flooded social media with messages urging the Nigerian star to remain in Bergamo long-term.
