Three Nigerians Chase Glory as Africa’s Best MMA Fighters Battle in Johannesburg

Three Nigerian mixed martial artists are set to take center stage today at the PFL Africa 2 event in Johannesburg—part of the continent's first-ever MMA league launched by the Professional Fighters League (PFL) and chaired by African sensation Francis Ngannou.

  • Patrick Ocheme faces Guinea’s Mohamed Camara in a high-stakes featherweight first-round bout. Ocheme (6–1) is considered one of West Africa’s elite in the division

  • Wasi Adeshina squares off against the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Jean Jacques Lubaya (9–1) in another featherweight match, while Elbert Steyn of South Africa takes on Morocco’s Abderahman Errachidy in a parallel contest.

  • Juliet Ukah, undefeated Nigerian and police officer with a 6–0 record, previously made history in Cape Town and was expected to fight in the women's strawweight showcase. While her participation at PFL Africa 2 is yet to be confirmed, she remains a prominent Nigerian contender in the league.

  • Platform for African talent: PFL Africa provides infrastructure and visibility never seen before on the continent—bringing together 32 fighters from 15 African nations in a competition format with playoffs and championships.

  • Opportunity for Nigerian MMA: With rising programs like the African Knockout Championship (AKO) and African Fighting Championship (AFC), Nigeria’s MMA scene is gaining momentum, paving the way for fighters like Ocheme, Adeshina, and Ukah to excel regionally and beyond
